Plastering in Manchester by Advantage Plastering and Damp Proofing

Good Plastering is Quieter Than Bad Plastering

You don’t notice good plastering. It’s flat, it’s clean, it takes paint well, and nobody walks into the room and thinks about it. Bad plastering, on the other hand, announces itself: shadows on the wall when the light catches it at an angle, cracks appearing within months, paint refusing to sit flat because the surface underneath was never quite right.

We’re Advantage Plastering and Damp Proofing, and plastering has been at the centre of what we do since we started trading in 2005. Over 600 jobs across Manchester and Tameside. We know the difference between a job that looks fine and a job that is fine, and we don’t confuse the two.

Plastering Manchester: What We Cover

We carry out the full range of domestic plastering work across Manchester and the surrounding area. New plaster on bare walls, re-plastering where existing surfaces have deteriorated, patching and repairs where isolated sections need attention, and specialist damp-related plastering where walls have been through rising damp treatment or other remediation work.

That last category is where our background as damp proofing specialists makes a genuine difference, and we’ll come back to that shortly.

When Do You Need Re-Plastering?

Plaster doesn’t last forever, particularly in older Manchester properties where walls have shifted, settled, or been exposed to moisture at some point. The signs are usually fairly clear: plaster that sounds hollow when tapped, surfaces that have started to crumble or delaminate, widespread cracking that goes beyond superficial hairlines, or a wall that was damp at some point and never properly remediated.

Decorating over failing plaster delays the problem but doesn’t fix it. Paint and wallpaper applied to a deteriorating surface won’t hold well and won’t look right for long. Re-plastering at that point is the correct step, not an optional extra.

We survey the wall before recommending anything. If a repair is sufficient, we’ll say so. If the full surface needs to come off, we’ll explain why. We’re not in the business of stripping walls that don’t need stripping.

The Plastering Process

Every plastering job begins with a proper look at the wall. Condition of the existing surface, any underlying issues, what prep work is needed. Rushing that stage is how problems get introduced before a trowel is even picked up.

We use bonding coat where required, applied and keyed correctly before the finish coat goes on. Finish plaster is applied in two coats, brought to a smooth, flat surface and closed off properly. We work methodically and we don’t cut the drying stages short. On damp-affected walls, the specialist render goes on first as described, with appropriate drying time before plastering over.

We leave the site clean. We take the waste. The finish is ready to paint once properly dried, typically around four weeks for new plaster to fully cure before decorating, and we’ll advise on that clearly.

Damp-Related Plastering: Why This Needs a Specialist

This is the area where the combination of skills really matters. When rising damp has been present in a wall, the plaster carries soluble salts drawn up from the ground. Those salts don’t disappear when the damp proof course is treated. They sit in the plaster, and because they’re hygroscopic, they continue to attract moisture from the air. New plaster applied directly over salt-contaminated plaster will fail. The salts migrate through, and the problem returns.

The correct process is to remove the contaminated plaster to a sufficient height above the salt zone, apply a sand and cement render incorporating a salt-retardant additive, and then plaster over that. This is the system we use on every damp-related replastering job, using materials that are BRE and BSI compliant throughout.

A lot of homeowners across Manchester have had this done incorrectly by contractors who either didn’t know the process or chose not to follow it. We’re called in to redo the work more often than we should be. Done right the first time, with the correct render system and appropriate materials, the replastered wall performs properly and the damp doesn’t return through the plaster surface.

Skimming and Plastering Over Dry Lining

Some properties across Manchester, particularly those that have been modernised or extended, have dry-lined walls or ceilings that were originally boarded and skimmed. Over time, skim coats can crack, lift, or deteriorate, especially around areas that have seen any moisture. We skim over existing board where the substrate is sound and the skim coat alone needs replacing. Where the board itself is damaged or the wall behind has been wet, we assess what needs to come out before recommending a course of action.

We also plaster over newly installed dry lining as part of larger projects, including extensions and renovation work in Manchester properties. The finish standard is the same regardless of the substrate.

Plastering Ceilings

Ceiling plastering gets its own mention because it’s a different skill set to walls and not every plasterer does it well. Lath and plaster ceilings in Victorian and Edwardian Manchester properties are a particular area of experience for us. Some can be repaired. Some have deteriorated to the point where replacement is more practical. We’ll look at the condition honestly and give a straight recommendation.

Why Experience Makes a Difference in Plastering

Plastering is a trade skill that takes years to develop properly. Mixing ratios, timing, the speed at which a finish coat needs to be worked, reading how a wall is behaving as you go, all of it comes with time and volume. Twenty-one years of plastering across the full range of Greater Manchester’s housing stock, from solid brick Victorian terraces to new-build extensions, gives us a depth of practical knowledge that’s difficult to shortcut.

We’re fully insured. We’re BRE accredited. Our work in damp-related plastering meets BSI standards. And we’ve completed over 600 jobs across the region, so our track record across Manchester speaks for itself.

Plastering Cost in Manchester

Plastering cost varies with the size of the room, the condition of the existing surfaces, and whether any damp-related prep work is involved. We provide clear, itemised quotes with no surprises. If you’ve received a like-for-like quote from another contractor, we’ll match it.

Steve was very helpful and professional throughout our dealings with him. We had a fairly big basement project which ordinarily could have felt very overwhelming but he made it feel very manageable. We were kept informed of progress at all stages and he always answered any questions we had. The team were very respectful in our home and always tidied up after themselves, and left the place clean at the end of each day. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him! Thank you.

Steve and his team did some damp proofing work on our front room which has a suspended floor. They did a great job and worked very quickly despite working during a heatwave. They took photos of every stage of the work that was done and cleaned up after themselves as best they could.
