Steve started Advantage Plastering and Damp Proofing in Stalybridge in 2005. He’s been in the trade for over 30 years. This is a small local company, not a franchise. The same care that went into the first job in 2005 goes into every one now.

How It Started

Steve got into plastering in the early 1990s. He was doing general building and renovation work across Greater Manchester: older housing stock, solid brick, the kind of properties that have their own set of problems if you know what to look for.

Damp was one of them. He kept coming across it, kept seeing it misdiagnosed or treated on the surface without ever fixing the cause. A coat of waterproof paint. A dehumidifier. A bill and a job left half done.

He got properly trained, got his BRE accreditation, and in 2005 started Advantage Plastering and Damp Proofing from Stalybridge. The thinking was straightforward: do the survey properly, find the actual cause, fix it, and back the work with a guarantee worth having.

That’s still exactly how it works.

The damp proofing industry has a mixed reputation and Steve knows it. There are companies out there who will look at a tide mark, call it rising damp, sell you a chemical injection, and move on. Sometimes that’s right. Sometimes it isn’t. Getting it wrong costs the homeowner money twice: once for the wrong treatment, and again when the damp comes back.

We invest in proper survey equipment — moisture metres, borescopes, thermal imaging cameras — because the diagnosis has to be right before any treatment makes sense. Steve does a lot of the surveying himself. He’d rather spend an extra hour on a survey than get to the end of a job and know it wasn’t quite right.
